Dragon Quest: Heroes Trailer is Hilarious, Adorable New Liquid Slime PS4 Revealed

It’s been a decade since Dragon Quest VIII first appeared on the PlayStation 2, and in all that time, Square Enix has been more focused on the Nintendo DS, Wii, and booming PC and smartphone platforms. The publisher is finally bringing the beloved series back to Sony consoles with Dragon Quest: Heroes on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

This is no traditional Dragon Quest either. In the recent trend of #MusouEverything, Dragon Quest: Heroes follows Hyrule Warriors in making the jump to Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors series. Yes, you’ll be able to control an Akira Toriyama-drawn hero as you charge through the ranks of thousands of the series’ iconic monsters including golems, cyclops, dragons, and of course, slimes!

Speaking of which, Sony also used its pre-TGS 2014 press conference to reveal a new adorable “Dragon Quest Metal Slime Edition” of the PlayStation 4 which will be released alongside the game in spring 2015. So adorable, almost makes me wish I had waited!

What’s best about Dragon Quest: Heroes is that, unlike Dragon Quest VII 3DS, the script is unimportant next to the action, and the language barrier shouldn’t be too high. If Square Enix chooses not to localize this one, you can still import it for the region-free PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 and play it without much of a hassle. Considering this is an action game adaptation of a series beloved for its charming, light stories, it comes as no surprise that the plot is not so deep.

Elsarse, a peaceful kingdom where humans and monsters live hand-in-hand. Until one day, the monsters change and start attacking humans. Akuto and Meer, the commanding officers of the kingdom’s imperial guards, must rise to restore the monsters’ natural hearts and return peace to Elsarse once again.

Watch the hilarious trailer and giggle at these goofy screenshots. I didn’t think the “Musou” genre could get any more insane than Hyrule Warriors, but developers Omega Force have proven me wrong. Let’s just hope they put the same level of care and details into the series’ lore. Four original characters star throughout most of the trailer’s CG and gameplay clips, but the cast of Dragon Quest IV shows up in the final shot.

And oh those NES sound effects are so sweet.

Dragon Quest: Heroes will be released for the PlayStation 3 and 4 in Japan in spring 2015. You can bet I’ll be checking in on it at TGS 2014 if Square Enix brings a playable build.
